When do you need a Biodiversity net gain assessment?
From January 2024 (April 2024 for small sites), BNG is a legal requirement for almost all new planning permissions for major developments in England. You will need this assessment early in your planning application process if your project involves impacting existing habitats.
What happens on the day
A qualified ecologist will conduct a site visit to survey and map the existing habitats. They will identify different habitat types, their condition, and assess their biodiversity value using the government's official 'biodiversity metric' tool.
How to prepare
- Provide detailed plans of your proposed development.
- Share any previous ecological surveys or environmental reports.
- Ensure full site access for the ecologist.
- Outline your desired timeline for the planning application.
- Consider areas for potential habitat creation or enhancement.
How to improve your result
- Integrate BNG considerations early into your design process.
- Explore opportunities for on-site habitat creation or enhancement.
- Consider the long-term management of biodiversity features.
- Communicate clearly with your planning consultant and ecologist.
- Understand the local BNG policies and priorities.
Why it is useful day to day
Ensures planning compliance for your development, contributes to environmental sustainability, and can enhance the aesthetic and ecological value of your property.
Why we ask these questions
We ask about your property, the proposed development plans, and any existing ecological surveys. This information is crucial for understanding the site's current biodiversity, the potential impact of development, and how to achieve the required net gain.
